What constitutes a successful job change? It's nothing other than a wage increase. Even if you search for a new job with the same skill set, the average wage won't change significantly, even if it's a competing company. The concept of "skill distance" is important here. It can be described as the gap between the skills required for the job you're considering and the skills you currently possess. To use a romantic analogy, if you have a crush on someone, if their preferences are significantly different from yours, your confession is likely to be unsuccessful. So, dieting, studying a foreign language, or improving yourself can increase the chances of a successful confession. The same is true for job changes, but there is an appropriate distance when it comes to work. A skill distance of 10% means you're unlikely to find a job with a higher wage than your current one. Conversely, a skill distance of 80% means you'd be abandoning most of your current skills, which is unrealistic. A distance of 30-50% is generally considered appropriate, resulting in a wage increase of 30-45% and a successful job change. While there has been a lot of buzz about personnel reductions, particularly among US tech companies, from the perspective of human resource mobility, this is not a temporary phenomenon but rather a sustainable system for society as a whole. In the United States, layoffs are not seen as the end of life, but as an opportunity to improve your skills and get a higher-paying job.
